I have always found it interesting that people readily agree that the unconscious is running the show roughly 95% of the time - you may have heard the version that 95% of everything we do is done by habit. Whether that part is true or not, neuroscientists agree that the conscious mind is only engaged and running the show about 5% of the time. However, the same people who agree with that focus the vast majority of their education, training and development time focusing on communication. Telling people what to do.
I can tell you from experience, it is far more beneficial, as a leader or parent, to condition the behaviors you want - that way they occur whether you are there or not. In fact, I beleive that is the true meaning of the phrase 'To know and not do, is to not know'. In this episode, I provide examples of and make the case for focusing some of your change management and development time on conditioning. In my opinion, having built and led fifteen high-performing teams over a thirty-year career, conditioning is the quickest path to high performance.
